What is Stress

Believe it or not, stress is at times necessary. In an emergency situation for example, stress can save our lives, by heightening our senses and giving us extra strength. It is an automatic process known as the “fight-or-flight” reaction, or stress response.

Stress is only harmful when it becomes overwhelming! Unfortunately many of us have lived in this stressed state of being for so long we have forgotton what its like to feel calm and focused. Stress feels normal to us.

You can’t avoid all stress, but you can counteract its negative effects! These treatments evoke the relaxation response; a state of deep rest that is the polar opposite of the stress response. The relaxation response brings your nervous system back into balance: deepening your breathing, reducing stress hormones, slowing down your heart rate and blood pressure, and relaxing your muscles.

Most people comment on how light they feel after their treatment, and are surprised at how well they were able to relax, often drifting in and out of sleep during a treatment. When we sleep our bodies are better able to recover from day-to-day stress, improved sleeping habits is another common response to these treatments.
